TRANSLATION

[The property] of Marcus Aterius Florentius and Iulia Valeria; we made [this sarcophagus] while living, by the grace of God.

COMMENTARY

There are no other attestations of the gentilicon Aterius in Concordia, while the cognomen Florentius is also found in the Persico area, engraved on the inscription of the fabricensis Flavius Florentius.

The gentilicon Valerius, on the other hand, is attested in Concordia in other inscriptions: in the immediate vicinity of the burial of Florentius and Valeria, the stele from the early Imperial age dedicated to Titus Valerius Romulus was found ( CIL V 8669 = EDR097829), used as spolia for the base of a sarcophagus (Bertolini 1877, 31), and in the same necropolis is the inscription of Valeria Peregrina.
